Portfolio

Here is how your portfolio needs to look and what needs to be in it:

1. You need to have a 3 prong folder
2. Include a title page, which will include your name, class, and semester
3. After the title page you will need a table of contents. It should be formatted like the following:

• Essays will be the first thing, and should go in the following order:
• Descriptive Essay (put the title of your essay)
• Narrative Essay (put the title of your essay)
• Analytical Essay (put the title of your essay)
• Persuasive Essay (put the title of your essay)
• Journals will be next and will need to be labeled as follow (I will put up a list with all the names and dates of the journals tomorrow):
• Journal #1 (plus title)
• Journal #2 (plus title)
• ....
• Journal #20 (plus title)

This is all that needs to be included in your essay, unless you have an extra credit assignment that still needs to be turned in.

Again if you want to turn in you portfolio starting Monday, May 6 you can drop it by my office during the hours of 8am-4pm in the Student Center room 124. I will only accept them until Tuesday 4pm in my office. If you do not submit them on Monday or Tuesday I will be in class from 5:30-6:00pm on Wednesday, May 8. I will not accept portfolios after May 8th. Any questions please contact me.

Homework due Wednesday, May 1

1. Journal #20: Any Topic. Choose any topic, any subject. Write about anything you want.
2. Draft of your Persuasive Essay. This will be your last chance to receive feedback, so please bring your essay.

Homework due Monday, April 29

1. 2nd draft of your Persuasive Essay is due. You will need to bring this to class for peer review, you will receive points towards your grade.
2. Journal #19: What Can We Do? Read the following article from USA Today on "How teens become terrorists". Use chapter 20 as a guide, and propose a solution to this problem.

Homework due Wednesday, April 24

1. Freewrite of your Persuasive Essay topic. Finalize the topic you will be writing about, sit down, and let the ideas flow on to the paper. You will need to bring this to class and we will be doing a peer review.
2. Journal #18: Semester Progress. Write about the goals you've accomplished so far this semester, where you are at now in your learning compared to the beginning of the semester (in any of your classes), what new things have changed or accomplished since January.

Homework due Monday, April 22

1. Read Chapter 20 pages 313-317, answering questions 1 & 2 on page 317
2. Journal #17: Propose a Solution. Read chapter 20 and use that as a basis for your journal. Write about a societal problem and propose a solution.
3. Choose a topic for your Persuasive Essay for Monday. Below are examples:

Extra Credit:

Watch one of the student submitted films in the 6th Annual SLCCSA Film Festival and right a one page review of the film. You can find the films at www.slccfilmfestival.blogspot.com. These are due Monday.

Homework due on Wednesday, April 17

1. Final draft of your Analytical Essay is due at the beginning of class. Please make sure you have a work cited page and attach the peer review paper. Please see prior post for information regarding how your paper will be graded and requirements.
2. Journal Entry #16: Persuade Your Readers to Act. Use Chapter 19 as a guide. Choose a current issue going on in our community, state, nation, or world, and write a persuasive argument that invites and motivates your reader to act.

Homework Due on Monday, April 15

1. Read Chapter 19, pages 295-296, and 300-303, and answer all the questions on page 303.
2. Bring your last draft of your Analytical Essay for peer review. The final draft of this essay is due Wednesday, April 17 at the beginning of class.

• Your essay must be a minimum of two pages, and no longer than three pages
• Must be formatted for MLA
• Must use a minimum of 4 sources to provide information in your paper
• 1 book
• 1 periodical (newspaper or magazine)
• You can find this online, but it will not count as one of your internet sources
• 2 internet sources
• Must provide a work cited page, and this is not included as part of the 2-3 pages for your essay
• I will be grading on:
• grammar and punctuation
• organization
• the strength of your content
• properly cited sources and work cited page
• length

Homework due on Wednesday, April 10

1. Another draft of your Analytical Essay, this will be the last peer review in class. You do receive points for this.
2. Journal #15: Take A Stand. Take a stand on an issue. It could be a very serious topic or a fun one, you just need to take a stand on one side or the other. And remember, it has to be a debatable issue.

Homework due on Monday, April 8

1. 3rd draft of your Analytical Essay. Bring this to class, we will be doing peer review and you do receive points for this.
2. Read Chapter 18, pages 275-278, answering questions 1 and 2 on page 278.
3. Journal #14: Write an argument/persuade someone to change their mind or do something using one of the 3 claims, a Claim of Truth, Claim of Value, or a Claim of Policy. Refer to Chapter 17 for help.

1. Read Chapter 17
2. 2nd draft of your Analytical Essay is due. We will be doing peer review in class.

Homework due Monday, April 1

1. First draft of your Analytical Essay. We will be doing peer reviews in class so please make sure to bring your paper. You will receive points for peer reviews in class.
2. Journal #13: Current Event. Write on a current event going on in the news. It could be from a news report you saw on tv or an article you read in the paper or online.

Homework due on Wednesday, March 27

1. Read pages 222-225, answering question #2 only about the essay.
2. Journal #12: Write and Extended Definition about something in your life. You could define what family means, you can define what success using anecdotes from your life, etc.
3. Free write for your Analytical Essay. Choose a topic that you want to write on, and then choose your style: Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, Classification, Process Writing, or Definition. Bring this with you to class.

Here are some sample topics from each of those styles to get you thinking:

Cause & Effect: Cheating in school, Why kids drop out of high school, Racial/Sexual/Religious discrimination

Compare & Contrast: Two perspectives on the same place (past and present), Two ways to break a bad habit, Online class compared to a traditional class

Classification: Facebook users, parenting styles, television shows, sports fans

Process Writing: A process that keeps you healthy, a process that you've mastered, a process in your planned occupation

Definition: words that are related to an art or sport, words that are in the news, words that are over or underused, words that do-or do not-describe you.

1. Read Chapter 15 page 229-232, and answer questions 1 and 3 on page 232.
2. Read Chapter 16 pages 243-246, and answer questions 1 and 2 on page 246.
3. Journal #11: Classify. Classify something in your life. It could be how you dedicate your time, your family, friends, etc.

Homework due Monday, March 11

1. Read Chapter 13, pages 199-202 and answer questions on page 202.
2. Read Chapter 14, pages 215-219, and answer questions 2 and 3 on page 219.
3. Journal #10: Compare & Contrast. Compare and Contrast to opposing things. Example: Basketball and basket weaving.
4. Your final draft of your Narrative Essay is due.

Homework due on Wednesday, March 6

1. Read Chapter 12, pages 183-187. You will need to answer the questions on page 187.
2. Journal #9: Write about the Cause & Effect of something.

1. Finish your 3rd draft of your Narrative Essay and bring it to class on Monday for peer review. You will receive points for this.

1. Journal Entry #8: Observe & Report. Observe a situation or people and write down what you've observed and make an analysis of what's going on.

Homework Due on Monday, February 25

1. Rewrite your first draft of your Narrative Essay and make sure to bring the second draft to class on Monday, we will be doing peer review's.
2. Journal #7: Choose Your Own Topic. Write about anything you want, it just needs to be 1/2 to 1 page.

Homework due on Wednesday, February 20

1. Read Chapter 11 pages 165-168, answering the questions on page 168. These can be handwritten, but will be turned in at the first of class.
2. Journal Entry #6: State of the Union Address. Click HERE to go to a text version of the address. You will need to pick out one issue that the President talked about and support why either you agree or disagree.
3. First draft of your Narrative Essay, "Why are you here in college today?" You will need to bring this to class on Wednesday because we will be doing peer review. You will receive points for this.

Upcoming Extra Credit Opportunities

1. Pizza & Politics on Wednesday, February 13 at 12pm in the Student Event Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus
The political action group Education First will be here to train students how to be more involved in the legislative process. 
You will need to write up a 1 page summary of the event, covering things that were discussed and how you can be more involved.
2. Shall We Dance on Wednesday, February 13 from 6-8pm in the Student Event Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus
Professional dance instructors will be coming and teaching. You will need to participate.
You will need to write up a 1 page summary of the event, describing the dances that were taught and giving a brief history of those dances.
3. The Black Student Union presents Dance Across the Ages on Friday, February 15 from        7-9pm in the Student Event Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus
Students will be showcasing African American dances such as hip-hop and African.
You will need to write up a page summary of the event talking about the dances performed and discussing the meaning and history behind the dances.

2. Journal Entry #5: Write about a person who has influenced your life. Try to recall a specific moment or setting where that took place.

Homework Due on Monday, February 11

1. Final Draft of your Descriptive Picture Essay. Must be at minimum half of a page, no more than a page, double spaced, with a title. Please staple your picture and peer review paper to the essay. Please do not put the essay and picture on the same piece of paper. This will be handed in at the beginning of class.
2. Read Chapter 7
3. Journal #4: Write about "A Moment That Changed Your Life"

Homework Due For Class on Wednesday, February 6

1. Read Chapter 5 and 6
2. Work on your next draft of your Descriptive Picture Essay, you will need to bring this and your picture to class on Wednesday.

Homework Due on Monday, February 4

1. Read Chapters 3 and 4
2. Work on your 2nd draft of your Descriptive Picture Essay from your Journal #3. You will need to bring this to class, along with the picture. We will be doing peer review in class.

Homework Due on Wednesday, January 30

1. Read Chapter 2
2. Find a picture for your Descriptive Picture Essay. You will need to bring this with you to class on Wednesday.
3. Journal #3: Freewrite. Do freewriting on the picture you've selected for your essay. Let your thoughts flow. Don't worry about spelling, punctuation, or structure. Just let every thought you have flow through to the paper.

1. Read Chapter 1 pages 12-25
2. Journal #2: Respond or Summarize. Choose an article from a newspaper or publication online, and either write a response to the article or summarize it in your own words.
