Persuasive Essay and Final Portfolio Requirements

Persuasive Essay

1. Must be at least 2-3 pages. Remember 2 pages is the minimum requirement, so if you would like to receive all the points for length you will need to make it longer than 2 pages.

2. You must include at least 4 sources, cite them properly in your paper using MLA style as well as include a Work Cited page at the end of your paper. Remember the Work Cited page is a separate page and does not count towards your page total for your essay. If you need help with formatting please refer to Chapter 32 in your text book.

3. Here are the following areas I will be grading on: Length, Structure and Organization, the Content you included in your paper (how well you integrated your sources, how much of your own voice is in the paper compared to sources. Remember sources are there to provide evidence and support your stance, not dominate the paper), Grammar, and Citations (in the actual essay and the correct formatting of them and the work cited page).

Final Portfolio Requirements

Your final portfolio must be submitted in a folder (not a binder) with 3 pins to secure all your writings. Please try and have your paper hole punched and organized before you come in. I do have some journals and essays that I still need to hand back, so I will have a 3 hole punch at class.

1. You must include a title page, please center the text on the paper. Example below:

Your Name
Class
Semester

Final Portfolio

2.   Table of Contents page will be your second page. Do not center this information on this page, it will be formatted to your left margin. Example below:

Table of Contents

Essays
1. Descriptive
2. Narrative
3. Analytical
4. Persuasive

Journals
1. Semester Goals
2. Summarize and Respond
3. Freewrite

...and you will continue to number through 20 and give the title of the journals that I will be including below. Remember to only include the journals on the table of contents page that you have. If you missed journal 5 you would skip the number 5 and go straight to six. The numbers that you are using represent the actual number of the journal. Also remember that you can still include the journals you missed for some credit.

Extra Credit (If you have any extra credit to turn in you will include this at the end of your portfolio)

3. Placement of your actual papers.

Please separate each section with a page that says either Essays, Journals, or Extra Credit. You will then place each paper in order as its labeled in the Table of Contents. If you decide to rewrite 1 paper then you will do the following: You will need to put your original that you turned in to me that has my notes and your grade, and then following that will be your rewrite. Again your rewrite a paper I will take your highest grade.

Journal Titles

These are just the titles you will need to use. I will email out the actual description and dates of each journal entry. If you decide to write the ones you missed for some credit you will be able to reference them back on the blog so you can look up any articles that you had to respond to or summarize, or use as part of your writing. Below is the titles:
  1. Semester Goals
  2. Summarize and Respond
  3. Free Write
  4. SLCC Article
  5. Influence
  6. A Memory
  7. Why Do You Believe What You Do?
  8. Respond

Homework due for class on 12/5

1. 3rd rough draft for Persuasive Essay. This will be the last time for any peer review and to receive points for that.
2. Journal Entry #20: Critical Thinking & Writing Activity #4 on page 294 from Chapter 18.

I will be posting the complete list of journals and their titles on Wednesday after class. This will help you to organize and create a table of contents for your final portfolio.

You also still have the chance to do extra credit. You can read an article (you must attach the article to your extra credit) and respond to it (read page 10 out of your textbook for a refresher on how to properly respond to a writing), or write a movie review of a movie you've seen recently (click here, here, or here for samples). These must both be 1 page to be eligible to receive up to 50 extra credit points. Please include these in your final portfolio. I will give further instruction on Wednesday where to place these in the portfolio.
