1. Journal Assignment: Respond to one of following two quotes. Share your thoughts, stories, or ideas that come from these sayings. 1) "You don't always get what you wish for, you get what you work for. Or 2) "Do not give up what you want most for what you want at the moment."
2. Your next paper will be a Narrative Essay about you. The topic: TELL YOUR STORY OF WHY OR WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SLCC. Come prepared to do some free writing. So think of experiences or people who have inspired you to be here in school and pursue higher education.

1. Read Chapters 7 and 8

2. Journal Assignment: Write a half page using the metaphor of cooking to compare it to writingand where revising and editing fit into the process. Doris Lessing stated that when it comes to writing, "The more a thing cooks, the better." So where in the process is the revising and editing? Is it when you marinade a steak? Does your ideas sink in, then you cook it (put the finishing touches on your paper)?

3. Finish and turn in the in-class assignment. If you were not in class you will need to read the following article, click HERE. After reading the article you will need to write a 2 to 3 paragraph letter to Governor Herbert letting him know your thoughts about the article. This will be due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

1. Your Essay is due for Describing a Picture at the beginning of class. Please follow these guidelines:

a. Your paper must be typed.

b. Your name, class, date, and title of the essay must be put up in the top right hand corner of the paper.

c. Please use Times New Roman font, 12 point

d. Must be double spaced

e. The actual essay MUST BE AT LEAST A HALF OF A PAGE and NO LONGER THAN A PAGE

Picture Essay Example

A picture consumed by the color red. Blood red. A body of water extends from the foreground into the background of the picture. The lake consumed by crimson, intermingled with the dark shadows of the setting sun. Dark outlines of palm trees line the banks of the crimson lake. Along its shore the silhouette's of the trees surround the mirrored reflection of the setting sun. At the far end of the lake the faint outline of a small mountain range ripples in the water. A few clouds shear across the red sky, whisping across the sun. A stark contrast against the red of the sky is the yellow sun. The upper half of the sun descending towards the earth, the lower half creeping out from the from the shores into the lake. This picture is one that can be taken in two ways. One of sheer horror, or one of pure beauty.

Homework due for class 2/8/12

1. Read Chapter 6. This time there will be a quiz.
2. Journal Assignment: You will choose one of your past journal assignments that you've turned in and rewrite it using Ch. 6 guidelines and helps. You will need to staple your old journal assignment to the rewrite/edited version.
3. Please bring your rough draft and picture for your Picture Essay. We will be going over them in class. Your Picture Essay will be due on Monday, February 13.
4. Later tonight I will be posting a sample to refer to for your Picture Essay.

1. Read Chapter 5. THERE WILL BE A SHORT QUIZ ON MONDAY ON THIS CHAPTER.

2. No Journal Assignment

3. Bring your rough draft's of your 1st essay we've been working on. The deadline for the paper has been pushed back Monday, February 13 due to some confusion over the assignment.
