Persuasive/Argumentative Essay Requirements

You must select a topic and either Take a Position (Ch. 18), Persuade Your Readers to Act (Ch. 19), or Present a Solution (Ch. 20). When selecting which style of writing to use please refer to those chapter, as well as Chapter 17 for help.

1. You must use and cite information from 4 different sources using MLA Style (Ch. 32).
2. Include a separate Works Cited page that must be formatted correctly using MLA Style (Ch. 32).
3. Paper must be between 2-3 pages, no longer than 3.
4. You will be graded also on your organization, the content of the paper, grammar, punctuation, etc.
5. You will also be graded on how well you utilize the style of writing, and if I am able to decipher which type you are using.

Final Portfolio Due Wednesday, May 2

There is no class on Monday, April 30. You will turn your final portfolio in on Wednesday. Your portfolio should be in a 3 ring folder (not binder). Remember, you will be graded on the overall look of your portfolio. Here is what should be included:

1. First Page will need to be a title page with your name and class.

2. Second page will be the table of contents. Your Essays will be the first things listed and this is the order they should be:

     -Persuasive/Argumentative Essay (please include the Title of your paper)

     -Analytical Essay (please include the Title of your paper)

     -Personal Narrative (please include the Title of your paper)

     -Picture Description Essay (please include the Title of your paper)

So your last essay that you've written will be the first one. Also, if you are rewriting one of your essays YOU MUST INCLUDE THE ONE I HANDED BACK TO YOU AND YOUR REWRITTEN ONE. Please don't just correct the things I marked. Look at all my notes and comments, and the paper should be fairly different from the original.

After the essays on the table of contents, you will then list your journals in order of the date they were submitted, starting in January through April. Below is the list of journal entries and the day they were due.

-Responding to a Quote (please see the post for the quotes you were supposed to respond to) (2/27/12)

-What do you Want to Accomplish by Getting a College Degree? (3/5/12)

-What does it mean to "Sit in the Front Row of Your Life." (3/7/12)

-Compare and Contrast Two Polar Opposites (4/2/12)

-Write about a Process (Describe or explain it. Refer to Ch. 15 for help) (4/9/12)

-Write an Extended Definition (Refer to Ch. 16 for help) (4/11/12)

-Write about an Issue Going on in Society that Matters to you and why it's Important (4/16/12)

-Take a Position on Hot Topic that has to deal with what you are Studying in School (4/18/12)

-Persuade your Readers to Act on a Social Issue that is Currently Relevant (4/23/12)

-Present a Solution to One Problem in either your Life, Society, Sports, Music, Movies, etc. (4/25/12)

Please make sure that ALL of your journals are TYPED.

1. Reading: Chapter 20, pages 313-317, and answer questions on page 317

2. Journal: Select a social issue that is relevant currently, and persuade your readers to action

1. Your 3rd Essay is due, the Analytical Essay.

2. Read Ch. 19 pages 295-299, answering the questions on page 299.

3. Journal: Take a position on a hot topic that has to deal with what you are studying in school.

Homework due for class on 4/16/12

1. Read Chapter 18 pages 275-276, and 287-291. Answer questions 1,2, and 5 on page 291.

2. Journal: Tell me about an issue going on in society that matters to you and why it's important.

3. Reminder: The question from Chapter 17 is due. It's question #1 on page 274.

4. IMPORTANT! PLEASE BRING YOUR ROUGH DRAFT FOR YOUR ANALYTICAL ESSAY. THE FINAL DRAFT IS DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18.

-You will need to cite 4 different sources using MLA format, and include a works cited page.

This is very important to your grade.

-Essay MUST BE AT LEAST 2 pages long, no longer than 3 (you will be docked points for

going under or over).

-I will be grading on grammar, organization, content, citing 4 sources, correct use of MLA

formatting, structure, and the proper use of style of writing you chose.

1. Read Chapter 17. Answer question #1 on page 274, this will be due on Monday, April 16.

2. Journal Assignment: Write and extended defenition. Refer to Chapter 16 for help.

3. Bring a finished and typed rough draft for your Analytical Essay. You will receive credit for bringing it to class.

1. Journal Assignment: Write about a process. Describe it or explain it. Refer to Chapter 15 for help.

2. Work on rough draft for Analytical Essay and bring it to class. Your topic must be approved by me.

Homework due for class on 4/4/12

1. Read Chapter 15 pages 229-232 and answer the questions on page 232. Read Chapter 16 pages 243-246 and answer the questions on page 246.

2. Pick your topic for your Analytical Essay and choose a style of writing from chapter 12-16.

Homework due for class on 4/2/12

1. Reading: Chapter 14, pages 215-219. Answer the questions for the story "Three Family Cancers" on page 219. Have them ready to hand in at the beginning of class.

2. Journal Assignment: Compare and Contrast to polar opposite things. Refer to Chapter 13 for help.
